The Classic Mercedes-Benz 300 (Wi86)
The Mercedes-Benz 300, also known as the W186, was the forerunner to what we know as the S-Class today.
The flagship of the brand’s post-war line-up, this large, four-door luxury saloon was the marque’s answer to what Rolls-Royce and Bentley were providing at the time, and it became a hit with statesmen on the content. So much so, in fact, that it takes its ‘Adenauer’ nickname from Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of West Germany who had a fleet of them.
It was more than just a big, simple, luxurious car. The 300 boasted a huge raft of innovations, sharing some mechanical componentry with the 300 SL Gullwing. Most notably, the M186 straight-six engine found under the bonnet, a more powerful development of which went into the 300 SL racer.
Four-wheel independent suspension and a rigid steel tube frame chassis ensured that the near five-metre long 300 was somewhat nimble for its size. It also featured an early adjustable suspension, with an electronically controlled rear torsion bar.
