The Classic VW Golf Mk1

The Beetle is Volkswagen’s most iconic vehicle, but the Golf may well be its most important when framed in a modern context. This was the platform upon which the company as we know it today was built, ushering in a new era of economical, small car design, with a dash of desirability.
Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the angular Golf contrasted to the classic lines of the Beetle it was intended to replace as Volkswagen’s small family car, joining the Passat and the Scirocco as part of the new-generation of VW products.
It also contrasted from a technical standpoint, being a total revolution over the Beetle’s rudimentary rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive, water-cooled drivetrain layout in favour of a more economical transverse front-engined, front-wheel-drive, water-cooled setup.
During its nine-year production run it established itself as one of the best-selling cars in Europe. Introduced to Britain in late 1974 at the height of the oil crisis, perhaps ironically the most memorable version of the Mk1 Golf was the performance version – the original GTI.
Often credited with being the original hot hatchback (though some earlier variations on the theme exist). Production was not expected to exceed 5,000 units, but almost 462,000 were built.
