The Classic Aston Martin DB2
The Aston Martin DB2 might live in the shadow of the DB5, the car made famous by James Bond, but to those in the know it’s the most underrated machine in the company’s history.
Replacing the old 2-litre, the DB2 was the first Aston Martin to pack a 2.6-litre powerful twin-cam six-cylinder engine, designed by W.O Bentley and acquired with Aston’s purchase of Lagonda. The new engine produced 105PS (77kW) at 5,000rpm. Power that translated to a 0-62mph time of under 12 seconds and a 116mph top speed – pretty good for the 1950s when a Volkswagen Beetle struggled to scratch 70.
The DB2 sat on a space frame chassis and aluminium body panels, tipping the scales at less than 1,200kg, suspended by coil-sprung suspension with powered brakes.
Three pre-production cars would go on to race at Le Mans, one of which had the new six-cylinder engine. It would retire after six laps, suffering from overheating, becoming the development car for the production DB2.
Aston showed the finished DB2 at 1950’s New York Motor Show, going on sale that year and staying in production until 1953 with just 411 cars made. A Drophead Coupe convertible would go into production in 1950 with just more than 100 made. A Vantage power upgrade would also be offered in 1950, bringing power up to 127PS (93kW) thanks to bigger carburettors, a revised inlet camshaft and a higher compression ratio.
The DB2 was priced from £1,914 when it went on sale in 1950 (or around £55,000, taking account of inflation). You’ll need closer to £140,000 to have one in the garage now.
