Triumph Classic Car Heritage
The Triumph Motor Company, one of the most accessible and popular marques for classic car enthusiasts, traces its origins back to 1885 when Siegfried Bettmann of S. Bettmann & Co. began importing European bicycles to London. His trade name soon changed to the Triumph Cycle Company, after being joined by German compatriot Moritz Schulte. A step that saw the pair begin manufacturing British made bicycles and motorcycles in Coventry.
After becoming Britain’s largest producer of motorcycles following the close of WW1, the marque acquired the assets of the Dawson Car Company in 1921, evolving to meet increased demand for automobiles. The first Triumph 10/20, a two-seat 4-cylinder tourer, arrived soon after. The success of the Triumph Super 7, released in response to the Austin 7, confirmed the popularity of the motorcar, leading to a company rebrand to the Triumph Motor Company.
Receivership and takeovers post WW2 saw Triumph pass hands between the Standard Motor Company and British Leyland before the brand’s sad demise in 1984. Bookending a 99-year history that saw the release of classic car favourites including the Triumph Roadster, Triumph TR2, Triumph TR6, Triumph Spitfire and Triumph Stag and Triumph TR8.
