The Classic Audi Quattro

The Audi Quattro’s lineage can be traced back to the late 1970s when a budding team of the company’s engineers headed to Sweden to find out how much four-wheel drive improved performance in deep snow. Quite a lot as it happens. The engineer’s prototype four-wheel drive – boasting a mere 75PS (55kW) – got the better of a control group of front-wheel-drive performance machines with significantly more power.

A hollow secondary shaft made Quattro possible by sending 50 per cent of power to the rear wheels via a centre differential, while the output shaft rotating within sent the remaining 50 to the front wheels.

The World Rally Championship, which was still dominated by two-wheel drive machines, was an obvious place to prove the new technology’s worth, and the Ur-Quattro made its debut in 1980.

In a theme that many Audi owners could relate to – thanks to a long wheelbase and an engine dropped ahead of the front axle – the new car was prone to understeer but proved its worth by triumphing on the snow-dusted stages of Austria’s Jänner Rallye.

But Audi wanted more. To solve the understeer problem, Audi chopped 320mm from the car’s wheelbase to build the Sport Quattro, a car that turbocharged five-cylinder powered by Walter Röhrl (1982) and Stig Blomqvist (1984) to their World Rally Championships.

Rally stage success quickly transferred to sales. Only ever planned for low-volume production, the original Ur-Quattro proved an instant success and would go into full production, staying on sale until 1991. The Sport Quattro, meanwhile, hit showrooms in 1984 with 306PS (225kW) courtesy of a turbocharged five-cylinder with an alloy block and a body that included a Kevlar bonnet, wings and roof.

But Quattro wasn’t just the preserve of the company’s performance models. In the early 1980s, Audi decided to offer the technology across its range of mainstream models; the first diesel Quattro came in 1995, and by the 2010s, even the A1 hatchback was available with Quattro. Without the Audi Quattro, rival four-wheel drive systems like BMW xDrive, Mercedes 4Matic and Volkswagen 4Motion may never have existed.
