The Classic BMW E30 3 Series
Many remember when a Ford Escort Ghia was considered posh, and a Granada Scorpio V6 occupied an unreachable dreamland.
However, that started to change in the early 1980s, and cars like the BMW E30 3 Series were the turning point. The E30 Series showed us a better way, cramming premium looks and sports car handling into a well-built saloon that could easily slot into family life. It was a solid option for a new generation of buyers who didn’t necessarily want to follow their parents into a lifetime of British Leyland, Ford or Vauxhall ownership. The E30 went on sale in 1982 as a two-door saloon, before the four-door, convertible and Touring, followed in 1983, 1985, and 1987 respectively.
While everyone else was turning to the more predictable nature and better packaging of front-wheel drive, BMW stuck doggedly to the purer steering and better handling balance of rear-wheel drive. To that, it then added a (modern for the time) five-speed manual gearbox and a choice of straight-six engine options that offered significantly more welly than the basic four-cylinder models feeding at the bottom of the range.
The exception that proves the rule was the E30 M3. Far from basic, it was built so BMW could race in DTM, getting a unique body (only the roof was unchanged from the standard 3 Series) and a four-cylinder engine that revved to a giddy 6,750rpm and produced up to 238PS (175kW). It was enough to get the road car from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds and top out at 146 mph. It would become the company’s most successful DTM racer.
Sadly, M3 prices have skyrocketed, and even leggy examples demand stratosphere prices. The rest of the range remains relatively affordable, though, meaning you can have a smart-looking, nice-driving classic with proper German engineering for less than the price of a used modern city car.
