The Classic Mini Mk2
The Mini was almost a decade old when it came in for its first refresh in 1967, when the MkII variant was ushered in. At the time, nobody would have believed it was less than a quarter of the way through its production run, the evergreen city car surviving until just after the turn of the millennium.
Up front, a simplified grille identified the MkII, while at the back it had a larger rear window (just like its Austin A35 forebear when compared to its own A30 ancestor) and the tail lights grew in size, too.
At its heart, though, the refreshed model was still very much the simple family car. It’s hard to believe that something so small was considered transport for four today when a Nissan Qashqai is considered by many the minimum viable family car. But in 1967, the space efficient Mini was all a family needed for happy motoring. The Mini had also established itself as a surprising performance car in the form of the Cooper and Cooper S. Estate, van and pick-up derivatives hinted at the platform’s versatility.
When the Mini was first launched in 1959, it was badged Morris Mini Minor and Austin Seven. By the time the MkII came around, everyone knew it simply as the Mini and it was on its way to becoming a brand in its own right.
