The Classic Rover SD1
The Rover SD1 is an icon despite (and potentially partly because of) its infamy. What was an incredibly ambitious project that represented an enormous investment both in terms of time and money, was so spectacularly let down by its execution.
It was, for its time, the most audacious post-war lunge into the modern motoring era yet taken by the British motor industry, with style and bravado in spades. Taking the place of the rather staid Rover P6, the long-in-gestation SD1 was innovative and forward thinking, rejecting tradition and embracing modernity inside and out. Designer David Bache famously took inspiration from the Ferrari 365 GTB/4, as well as the BMC Pininfarina Berlina Aerodynamica.
But the car was so stunning that it practically leapt off magazine pages, quite literally fell apart once it was on your drive. Prone to any and all of the ways a car can disassemble itself – oxidisation and all – the SD1 typified the failings of the bloated, mismanaged British Leyland organisation that inefficiently and ineffectively birthed it. Even though it only launched in 1976, by 1981 Rover were already looking at developing a ground-up replacement in tandem with Honda; the SD1 name and shape so tarred by the ‘Leyland’ brush, even the British government looked past it to executive cars from the European mainland.
As a large executive car, the SD1 at its peak offered a range of powertrains. But it’s the 3500 V8 that is arguably the definitive mill and the other side of the coin along with those looks, that makes it so memorable. Though not the purest in terms of design, the Vitesse with its blistered arches and jutting chin spoiler was the most powerful, with a 190PS (140kW) version of the 3.5-litre V8.
Though not a success on the road, the SD1 was at least something to behold on track, with Steve Soper, Andy Rouse, Tom Walkinshaw, Win Percy and many more adding wins to its tally. Rouse won the 1984 British Saloon Car Championship in a Vitesse, just two years before the road car would be discontinued. It went out with a bang in 1986, when Kurt Thiim won the 1986 DTM championship in a Rover Vitesse.
