The Classic Alfa Romeo Giulia
The Alfa Romeo Giulia, sold from 1962-1978, was one of the world’s first sports saloons with a practical four-door body allied to a twin overhead cam engine. Revealed in 1962, the Giulia TI had a 1.6-litre four-cylinder producing 92PS (70kW) at an eager 6,200rpm. The ‘TI’ badge, previously used on cars like the 1950s Giulietta saloons, referred to Turismo Internazionale touring car racing.
Early versions of the TI had drum brakes and a column-mounted gear shifter allowing for a front-seat bench that made the Giulia an (incredibly cramped) six-seater. By 1963, the Giulia had swapped its drum brakes for discs on all four wheels.
The TI Super arrived the same year, packing twin Webers for 112PS (82kW) and a 115mph top speed – up from the standard car’s 106. Plexiglass windows, single headlights, revised bumpers and lovely magnesium wheels in place of the standard cars’ steelies shaved 95kg of the basic Giulia’s 1,000kg kerb weight. Alfa made 501 examples.
In 1964, the Giulia 1300 arrived, followed by models such as Giulia 1300 ti (1966), Giulia 1300 Super (1970), Giulia Super 1.3 (1972), Giulia Nuovo Super 1300 and Giulia Nuova Super 1600 (1974), and even the Giulia Nuova Super Diesel in 1976.
