The Classic Audi TT Mk2
For the second-generation TT, Audi sought to retain the design-led appeal of the original with an evolutionary appearance, while enhancing the driving characteristics and introducing new technology under the metal. The result was a car that still sold on looks, but was more tempting for sports car buyers wanting something fun from behind the wheel.
Again, available in Coupe and drop-top Roadster forms, the chassis was constructed from a mixture of aluminium and stamped steel, while the bodywork made extensive use of the former. The bonnet, roof doors and more were made from aluminium in a bid to trim weight from the car, which had grown in size and appeared more rakish, and sportier than before.
As before, a 3.2-litre V6 quattro version headlined the range from launch as the high-performance variant. But two new hot versions would appear. The first TT S, using a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 272PS (200kW) was the warm-up for a turbocharged five-cylinder TT RS version. This RS model produced 340PS (250kW) and was capable of 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds. It was enhanced with an RS Plus variant midway through the car’s life, upping the power to 360PS (265kW).
The Mk2 was also the first TT to be offered with a diesel option, and it also featured adaptive suspension – Audi Magnetic Ride – incorporating electromagnetic damping technology.
