The Classic MGB
The MGB came to life in 1962 as a modern little sportscar that could offer the driving thrills of bigger machines like the Jaguar E-type without the eye-watering price and running costs. Smart looks and decent handling made it the most successful sportscar of its time over an 18-year lifespan.
Lighter and stronger than the MGA’s body-on-frame design, the MGB’s unitary body was thoroughly modern for the time, with features like independent front suspension, a four-speed gearbox with overdrive for cruising, sharp rack-and-pinion steering and disc brakes. Power came from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that produced 96PS (71kW), getting the little sportscar from 0-62mph in a spritely 11 seconds.
By 1965, the open-top MGB broadened its scope with the Pinnafarina-bodied MGB GT coupe, which looked great but also injected the B with added practicality.
MG’s sportscar was upgraded throughout its life, getting a Borg Warner automatic gearbox, synchromesh on all its forward gears, and a series of styling updates. That culminated in the dark, federalised days of 1974 when, to comply with US safety regs, the MGB got a raised ride height which destroyed its handling, and polyurethane bumpers that ruined the chrome-bumper looks of earlier cars.
A thoroughly modern sportscar when it first went on sale, the MGB is now an ideal starter classic with superb parts support, simple mechanicals and a roomy engine bay that’s easy to work in.
