Morris Motors Limited was founded in 1919 out of the ashes of WRM Motors Limited, continuing its operations which started in 1912. It was arguably one of the first titans of British motor manufacturing, becoming Britain’s biggest car manufacturer as early as 1924, with models like the Cowley and Oxford. 

It managed as much thanks to William Morris’s approach of buying in as many components as possible for assembly in his own facilities. He was also a stickler for constantly revising efficiencies in manufacturing and seeking new innovations, without ever resorting to outsourcing manufacturing.

In response to tough financial conditions Morris doubled down on small, affordable cars for the masses, with the Minor of 1928.

In addition to producing Spitfires during the war years, William Morris, now Lord Nuffield, also played an enormous role in battling the polio epidemic of 1938, producing some 1,700 next-generation iron lungs at the Cowley works and donating them to hospitals. Nuffield would go on to play a part in the foundation of BUPA and Nuffield Health. Nuffield is remembered as much for his philanthropy as he is a titan of industry.

Post-war, Morris hit the ground running supplying a war-weary but eager-to-drive nation with new generations of the Minor and Oxford and eventually, the Mini. Yes, that Mini. Morris’s conglomeration into BMC and later Leyland, led to the Marina and the eventual demise of the Morris name.
