The Classic Nissan 300ZX
Alongside the Skyline, the 300ZX was Nissan’s other performance icon of the 1990s. The arrival of the R32 Skyline GT-R in 1989, with its four-wheel-drive system and huge motorsport success meant that the brand’s other performance badge – its ‘Z’ cars – needed a new sense of purpose in an increasingly technological era.
The 300ZX was the vehicle to deliver this leap forward. Refining the coupe profile of its Z-badged predecessors into a modern, aerodynamic shape, 2+2 UK market cars from 1990 to 1994 came with a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 280PS – one of the first cars to confirm to the ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ brokered between Japanese manufacturers to officially limit the power output of performance cars like the 300ZX.
Rules aside, it was more than enough power for the day. 0-62mph took less than six seconds, with top speed for both the four-speed automatic and five-speed manual variants 155mph. With a new focus on quality and with better handling than its US-market oriented Z31 predecessor, suddenly Nissan had not just a reborn Z-car on its hands: it had a bona fide Porsche 944 Turbo rival.
And it wasn’t short on technological innovation. Air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, cruise control and electric mirrors were standard equipment for UK cars, while the Z32 300ZX also boasted rear-wheel steering and adjustable rear suspension.
