The Classic Porsche Boxster (987)
The second-generation Porsche Boxster was a car that had to tread a fine line. The original 986 version had been a big hit with first-time Porsche buyers, offering an appealing entry-level proposition to those not quite with the financial heft to stretch to a 911. But the 987-generation car was a bit more aspirational, and appealing in its own right.
The exterior design was gently modernised, but the interior was completely overhauled to match the improving quality standard that had been established by the 997-generation 911 introduced just before it. Suddenly, the Boxster was not just an understudy – it was a compelling mid-engined alternative, for some at least.
At launch, two engine options – both naturally aspirated flat sixes with manual or Tiptronic gearbox options – were available. The base model utilised a 240PS (177kW) 2.7-litre engine while the ‘S’ version of the 987 Boxster had a larger, heavier 3.2-litre unit producing 280PS (206kW).
Both these engines were revised in 2007 with additional power thanks to a small round of updates and the 3.2-litre engine enlarged to 3.4-litres. The facelifted 987.2 variant introduced in 2009 saw the entry level car step up to a 2.9-litre unit. A lightweight Boxster Spider arrived in 2010, while the 987 boxster was complemented by a coupe sibling under the Cayman badge for the first time, not long after the roadster’s launch in 2005.
