Saab Classic Car Heritage
Formed as a diversification project at the close of WW2 by Saab AB, a Swedish aerospace and defence company, Saab Automobile AB launched its first car in 1949. With an aerodynamic body, formed from a single sheet of metal, the Saab 92 was heavily influenced by aviation. Exclusively available in dark green, due to a surplus of wartime aeroplane paint, the low-drag teardrop shaped car was the first of many now iconic designs from the Swedish marque.
Developed throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Saab 92 evolved into the Saab 93, Saab 95, Saab 96 and Saab 99. With Saab’s first performance car, the sleek Saab 94 Sonett being released in the era.
Saab became Saab-Scania between 1969-1989, later owned by General Motors and Investor AB between 1989-2000. This productive 40-year period yielded the Saab 99 Turbo S, Saab 9000 and the best-selling Saab 900 – a much-missed model that was also available in an exciting performance ‘aero’ package with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The Swedish marque may well be defunct, but with a host of desirable classic cars still on the road, the Saab name continues to rightfully resonate in classic car garages.
