The Classic VW Golf Mk2
While the Mk1 Golf was revolutionary, the Mk2 version was more a mission in consolidation for Volkswagen. Designed in-house, but with clear influence from the Giorgetto Giugario Mk1, the mission statement for the second-generation Golf was simple: more comfort, more practicality, and more performance.
The original had been one of the first front-engined, front-wheel-drive family hatchbacks when it launched in 1974, but the Mk2 launched to a completely different landscape in 1983. It was a noticeably bigger car, reacting to a growing C-segment hatchback market that was slowly beginning to dominate the European Car of the Year awards.
Not only did it have more competitors than ever, it had more customers, too, hence the Mk2 Golf featured a wide-ranging expansion of the Golf line-up to include numerous performance versions and four-wheel-drive variants.
Alongside a selection of regular petrol and diesel versions, two versions of the GTI were made, both using a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. The GTI 8-valve developed 112PS, while the 16-valve version produced 139PS. It wasn’t the most potent version of the Mk2 though – not even the runner up. The supercharged G40 and Rallye variants took the hot Golf to new levels, while the four-wheel-drive Country model served as a precursor to the Golf-based crossovers we see today.
