The Classic Mazda MX5 Mk2
The Mk2 Mazda MX-5 could have been the model’s difficult second album, but Mazda successfully refined its small popular roadster with improvements intended to modernise the car without sacrificing its character.
Sadly the pop-up headlights were gone, replaced by more grown-up fixed lens items, but the redesign was a careful evolution of the original with some contemporary Mazda design cues thrown in. It barely grew in size over the Mk1 MX-5, but it did tip the scales at just over one tonne, with some of the modernisation and extra tech adding weight.
Thankfully, Mazda upped the power in response. The entry-level 1.6-litre’s 110PS (81kWh) was joined by a 1.8-litre option producing 140PS (103kW), while facelifted models went further with up to 146PS (107kW) and the addition of an extra gear, with a six-speed manual transmission.
A plusher cabin with more equipment was joined by a more refined drive, but the ‘NB’ MX-5 was still a fun rear-wheel-drive roadster capable of taking the fight to an increasing number of small sports cars emerging in the late 1990s.
