The Classic Triumph TR4
Triumph’s TR series of sportscars have long claimed the affections of classic British sportscar fans. The TR4, introduced in 1961, marks one of the high points.
The TR3 had been a big hit, with almost 75,000 produced. The TR4 was less popular, but it fired the starting pistol on a modernisation of the line-up, introducing an important redesign and new technology.
Developed under the codename ‘Project Zest’, the TR4 was based on the same rolling chassis as the TR3, but with a far more up-to-date body. The shape became squarer, and most notably, it incorporated larger, straight-cut doors with winding windows, compared with the TR3s cutaways which required leather side-curtains. A removable steel ‘Surrey’ roof was also available, creating a Targa-style option, while interior space increased substantially.
The engine was carried over from the TR3, but with displacement increased to 2.1-litres for a maximum power output of 105PS (78kW), linked to a synchromesh transmission. A wider track front and rear was combined with rack and pinion steering – a key upgrade over the TR3’s cam and lever based setup.
